National Legislative Update – Janet Trautwein

During this course, participants will learn about recent legislative and regulatory actions affecting health policy. The course will examine what actions have been taken so far, what the political and philosophical barriers have been, what actions we can expect in the near-term and later, what prompted the need for changes to be made, how the changes are being made and the role that NAHU is having in this process, and what NAHU members, the overall agent/broker community, and employers play in this process.

ERISA, DOL, and ACA Updates – Larry Grudzein

Larry Grudzein will guide us through the current regulatory issues and updates.  Department of Labor disability claims regulations will be addressed, along with a discussion about wellness program developments, and the delay of the Cadillac tax.  Larry will also discuss the status of the ACA reporting and the impact that will have on your organization.

Pharmacy Update – CVS Health

Joshua Fredell is Sr. Director of Specialty Product Development at CVS Health. Josh will be discussing factors contributing to high health care cost, strategies to improve and contain costs while improving health care.

Association Health Plans – Jeff Goodwin

Jeff Goodwin will teach not only about the definition of Association Health Plans, but will also guide participants through federal MEWA regulations.  Class participants will also receive an update on DOL proposed regulation on Association Health Plans, and will also discuss the implications of those regulations.

Leadership Training, The Essence of Leadership – Pat Griffey and Mike Deagle

Attendees will not only discuss the fundamentals of leadership, but will also talk about how to encourage growth within your leadership team.


Dennis E. Wright, RHU, CSFP

Denny Wright has been in the employee benefit business for 32 years and is recognized by many of his peers as a leading expert in self-fund Read More ed health care plans. Denny is a graduate of Indiana University, a Registered Health Underwriter (RHU), and a Certified Self-Funded Professional (CSFP). Over the course of his career he has founded two different third party administrators and built them into successful organizations. Denny is currently employed as Vice-President at Employee Plans, LLC, a subsidiary of ONI Risk Partners and a leading third party administrator of self-funded employee benefit plans in the Midwest.  Denny is also wrapping up his second term as President of the Indiana State Association of Health of Health Underwriters.

Patricia A. Griffey, Lutcf, CSA, ChHC, RHU, REBC

Patricia Griffey is Vice President of the Board of Trustees for the National Association of Health Underwriters (NAHU) and is the owner and Read More operator of Page 1 Medicare located in Elkhart Indiana. She has served as a member of the Board of Directors for the Indiana Chamber of Commerce, currently participating on the Chamber’s Healthcare Policy Committee, and has served multiple years on the Agent Advisory Council for Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Indianapolis. Pat is a Lifetime and Qualifying member of the NAHU Leading Producers Roundtable and has been recognized multiple times for her industry service and leadership.  She considers herself most blessed to have been named Honorary Insurance Commissioner by the State of Indiana Department of Insurance in 2009. Mrs. Griffey resides in Elkhart Indiana with her husband Don, who is also an active insurance professional and NAHU member.  They enjoy spending quality time with their five children and nine grandchildren.

Michael P. Deagle, Region 3 Vice President

Mike has been a member of the Northern Illinois Chapter since 2006 and has been actively involved since joining. He has served his local ch Read More apter in various roles, Membership, Legislative, and HUPAC chair, as well as serving as President for 3 terms.  He is currently completing his first year of a 2 year term as Region III Vice President after being Region III HUPAC Chair from 2015-2017. Mike is a graduate of Ohio State Univeristy, and has 25+ years’ experience in the insurance industry.  In 1999, Mike started his own insurance agency. While having many ups and downs along the way, Mike merged his agency with 3 other agency owners to form BenAxis, Inc.  November 1, 2014. Mike resides in Geneva, Illinois with his wife Nancy, and three children. Mike enjoys spending time with his family, exercising and rooting on his beloved Buckeyes and Chicago Cubs.

Larry Grudzien, Attorney At Law

Lawrence (Larry) Grudzien, JD, LLM is an attorney practicing exclusively in the field of employee benefits. He has experience in dealing wi Read More th qualified plans, health and welfare, fringe benefits and executive compensation areas. He has more than 35 years’ experience in employee benefit law. He has extensive practice advising on all aspects of employee benefit law including: drafting and reviewing individually designed and prototype retirement plans and Employee Stock Ownership Plans,  performing due diligence on employee benefit issues for merger, acquisition and outsourcing transactions and advising on administrative and design issues. Mr. Grudzien was also an adjunct faculty member of John Marshall Law School’s LL.M. program in Employee Benefits and at the Valparaiso University’s School of Law.  Mr. Grudzien has a B.A. degree in history and political science from Indiana University, J.D. degree from Valparaiso University School of Law and LL.M. degree in tax from Boston University School of Law. He is a member of Indiana and Illinois Bars.

Janet Trautwein, Executive Vice President and CEO

Janet Trautwein is the executive vice president and chief executive officer of the National Association of Health Underwriters (NAHU) in Wa Read More shington, D.C. Her responsibilities include oversight of all NAHU activities and primary representation of the association to the media, government agencies and elected officials at all levels. Janet served for many years as the head of NAHU’s government affairs department, directing the government and political affairs of the organization.  She is considered an expert in health insurance markets and health plans of all sizes and frequently testifies before Congress on these issues. Her expertise in issues related to the uninsured, health insurance pools, risk and reinsurance pooling, health-related tax issues, and both national and global health reform has been recognized throughout the industry. In 2004, Janet received the Harold R. Gordon Memorial Award, which honors the “Health Insurance Person of the Year” and is considered to be the most prestigious award in the health insurance industry.
